The investment is open to businesses (and charities) as well as individuals. You will probably have ways of reaching local businesses, and you might want to consider them in your communications plans. In general, the same messaging that you develop for individuals will also work for businesses, but there a few small differences to be aware of.

Businesses will have long lead times to invest

This is a slight generalisation. But business decision making usually involves multiple people, and businesses often make their financial decisions at particular times of year, or have lengthy planning cycles for considering new ideas.

We have yet to see many businesses investing in a first raise from a council. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start communicating with them. Just bear in mind it might take a while to see engagement from that

Businesses are investing their treasury funds

The kind of businesses that will have funds to invest are those who have funds that they need to earn interest on. That is only a subset of companies, typically larger organisations or those such as property developers who might at any time have a reserve of cash on their balance sheet. The investment is a good fit for these businesses, being low risk and offering better returns than other options.

Charities can be a good target

Charities typically have funds - known as an endowment - that they invest to help fund their charitable activities. This investment can be a good fit for these requirements, as it has local benefits for the places they are based.

There is an additional ‘local CSR’ angle that can work for businesses

In addition to core messaging, it is possible to use a different sell to businesses. Those companies that are headquartered in your area may have a connection to place already, and a desire to make a difference in the community which they are based. Such CSR based messaging can be effective, certainly given the direct local impact the investment will be making.

Consider who you approach

Who you reach at the business is important. A Finance Director will have a different mode of connecting with the investment than an HR Officer. Messaging needs to be tailored as much as possible. If you have any direct relationships with businesses, it can be good to use them as a way to start the conversation.
